A day set apart

A weekly day of gathering

Friday is the one day the Quran names for collective remembrance.

  1. The Quran on Friday

    Quran 62:9

Believers are instructed to leave trade and proceed to the remembrance of Allah when the call to prayer is made on Friday.

  2. The best day

    Reported in Sahih Muslim

Friday is reported as the best day on which the sun rises, and the day on which Adam was created.

  3. A shared appointment

    Original guidance

Unlike the daily prayers, Jumu'ah gathers the whole community in one place at one time.

  4. A dependable rhythm

    Original guidance

It returns every seven days, so it becomes a fixed spiritual checkpoint rather than an occasional event.

02

What happens on Friday

The prayer, the khutbah and the dua

Friday concentrates several acts of worship into one day.

  1. Jumu'ah prayer

    Reported practice

Jumu'ah is the congregational Friday prayer that replaces Dhuhr for those it applies to.

  2. The khutbah

    Reported practice

The sermon is part of the worship, not a preliminary to it. Listening to it is part of the prayer.

  3. The answered hour

Reported in Sahih Muslim, Book of Jumu'ah

There is a reported hour on Friday in which supplications are answered, though its exact time is understood differently.

  4. Salawat

    Reported practice

Sending blessings upon the Prophet on Friday is encouraged in reported guidance.

  5. Surah Al-Kahf

    Reported in several Hadith collections

Reciting Surah Al-Kahf on Friday is reported in several collections.

03

More than an individual act

Friday builds a shared identity

The day is designed around people, not isolation.

  1. One congregation

    Original guidance

Rich and poor, young and old stand in the same rows, dressed in the same direction of prayer.

  2. Greeting and goodwill

    Original guidance

Friday is a natural time to greet neighbours, check on the absent and offer help.

  3. Charity

    Reported practice

Give in charity on Friday, even a small amount, as part of the generosity of the day.

  4. Reconciliation

    Original guidance

Use the day to release a grudge and repair a relationship before it hardens.

04

What Friday asks of you

Turn the day into a weekly reset

Meaning only lands when it changes behaviour.

  1. Prepare early

    Original guidance

Complete the recommended preparation and arrive before the khutbah, not halfway through it.

  2. Be fully present

    Original guidance

Put the phone away and give the khutbah your undivided attention.

  3. Reflect honestly

    Original guidance

Ask what went well in your week and what needs repair, then act on one thing.

  4. Carry it forward

    Original guidance

Let Friday's intention shape the following week, not only the morning.

Helpful answers

Common questions

Is Friday a day off in Islam?+

Friday is a day of worship with a specific congregational prayer, but it is not a full rest day in the way a weekend is. Many Muslims work before and after Jumu'ah.

Why does Jumu'ah replace Dhuhr?+

Jumu'ah is the congregational prayer appointed for Friday and stands in place of Dhuhr for those to whom it applies.

Is the whole day blessed or only the prayer time?+

Reported guidance highlights the whole day — preparation, the prayer, dua, charity and Salawat all belong to it.

Do I have to attend every Friday?+

Jumu'ah applies to those it applies to. If you have a genuine reason you cannot attend, consult a qualified scholar about your circumstances.

A day that comes back every week

The gift of Friday is its repetition. Whatever the week looked like, it returns with a fresh chance to gather, listen, give and start again.
